The challenge

Kaanbal® ("to learn" in Mayan) is a Mexican non-profit organization focused on promoting universal access to information and communications technology in places where the Internet is very limited or non-existent. We ensure that anyone can access the best resources from the web anytime, anywhere, regardless of Internet connection.

Offline education

Our educational kits for schools and community centers, do not require an Internet connection to work and allow students to instantly access offline versions of the world's best free educational websites including Wikipedia, Khan Academy, mobile apps, educational games, and 360 experience.

Online connecivity

We use the Internet not only as a tool for education but also for the generation of economic opportunities. By enabling Internet access at indigenous handicraft cooperatives, we allow artisans to market their products online without leaving their communities, helping them to save money, increase their sales and improve their business network.

Areas of impact

Our mission is to improve aspirations and quality of life for people and students from underserved communities by engaging them with the rest of the world through the use of technology.

Information Society

Ubiquitous connectivity is transforming societies across the globe. Emerging technologies and the growing interconnectedness of our economies will continue to shape social norms, how communities are formed, and how voices are heared.

Digital Divide

The future will no longer be only about access to connectivity but will be linked to safety and the ability to leverage the Internet for a broad range of opportunities.

Democratization of Technology

Digital freedoms & rights face an uncertain future. The wave of technological transformation poses grave threats to fundamental rights like freedom of speech, and many others, mainly for remote areas.

Work

We work together with global organizations, companies, and amazing people to bring education and technology to the places that need it the most in order to promote the use of new learning methodologies and to improve the quality of life in the people.

One step closer

Powered by Kaanbal

This was the first access point established by Kaanbal and is located in Agua Azul community, about 65 km away from Cancun Downtown where people who live there lack phone and radio signal. A RACHEL-Pi server was placed loaded with all the content of sites like Wikipedia, Khan Academy, books, medical encyclopedias, health guides, and much more.

This content is now part of the academic resources of the rural high school, where both teachers and students who attend daily are directly benefited, including local people and other from nearby communities such as Juárez, Héroes de Nacozari, San Martiniano, San Lorenzo and Delirios.

Bee connected

Powered by Internet Society

Through the Beyond The Net Funding Program of Internet Society, we received a grant to enable online connectivity to the town of Los Juárez. The Internet link is used by the artisan cooperative “Muuch Kaab” (translated as “united bees” in Mayan), who fabricated handmade soaps, shampoos, lotions and more products based on Melipona bee honey.

Now they can sell their products easier, having registered a 60% increase in sales. From this cooperative 8 families depend directly, and the whole population of the community are making good use of the Internet link; saving money as they no longer have to move to nearby cities to access the network connectivity.
